A Paste Magazine, revista online americana existente desde 2002, divulgou uma lista com os 300 melhores álbuns da história da música na opinião de sua equipe. Apesar de dominado por artistas dos Estados Unidos e do continente europeu, o ranking — que pode ser visto na íntegra mais abaixo nesta página — acabou incluindo dois trabalhos brasileiros.
Numa colocação mais baixa, “Acabou Chorare” (1972), dos Novos Baianos, ficou em 51º lugar. Matt Mitchell, que assinou a escolha, descreveu o trabalho como “impressionante instrumentalmente” e “esperançoso liricamente”.
Ele escreveu:
“‘Acabou Chorare’ dos Novos Baianos foi uma mistura perfeita de samba rock e tropicália criada enquanto acontecia a ditadura militar no Brasil e os membros da banda eram oprimidos. Instrumentalmente, ‘Acabou Chorare’ é impressionante, enquanto que, liricamente, o álbum é esperançoso em um momento em que não deveria. Todo o projeto é cheio de paixão e proporciona uma audição fácil, única e ensolarada. Dançante e sublimemente memorável, ‘Acabou Chorare’ é acessível a grande parte do público e é uma obra-prima edificante, em grande parte nunca replicada desde então. ‘Preta Pretinha’ e ‘Brasil Pandeiro’ são cheias de esplendor melódico e os tons mais lentos que surgem em ‘A Menina Dança’ e ‘Acabou Chorare’ só diversificam ainda mais a dimensionalidade das joias que são os sambas rápidos. Já “Clube da Esquina” (1972), creditado a Milton Nascimento e Lô Borges, integrou o top 10 e apareceu na 9º posição. O mesmo profissional ficou a cargo de justificar a entrada do disco e, ao fazê-lo, o elegeu como o “maior álbum brasileiro de todos os tempos”.
“1972 foi um ano e tanto para a música brasileira. Com ‘Clube da Esquina’ e ‘Acabou Chorare’, é difícil imaginar uma combinação de lançamentos mais enigmática da história musical de um país. Milton Nascimento e Lô Borges criaram algo tão retumbante e único no ‘Clube da Esquina’, que encanta como uma brisa de aconchego e uma miscelânea sonora. Com elementos do pop barroco e folk, junto de toques de psicodelia e MPB, o ‘Clube da Esquina’ se inspira tanto nos Beatles quanto em Chopin, resultando num dos projetos sul-americanos mais ricos já compostos. Com 64 minutos de duração, o álbum duplo não supera a sua própria criatividade. A majestosidade pop de suas 21 músicas é descarregada na felicidade tropical de ‘Cais’ e na bossa nova de ‘Clube da Esquina No. 2’. Mais tarde, encontra reservas no samba mais calmo de ‘Os Povos’. Do começo ao fim, as imagens e sons marcantes de Nascimento e Borges, que viam a música clássica e a pop como iguais implorando para serem consagradas em conjunto na música para sempre, fazem de ‘Clube da Esquina’ o maior álbum brasileiro de todos os tempos.”
Em relação ao topo, Stevie Wonder conseguiu a liderança com “Songs in the Key of Life” (1976). Na segunda posição, figurou o The Cure, com “Disintegration” (1989) e, por fim, Kate Bush fechou o top 3 com “Hounds of Love” (1985).
Como destacado pela Paste Magazine, toda a equipe profissional da revista ajudou a idealizar a classificação. Influência e atemporalidade atuaram como os principais critérios, além da subjetividade de cada participante:

Vale destacar que não é a primeira vez que os projetos brasileiros protagonizam listas do gênero. Os dois discos mencionados também estão entre os 50 melhores de 1972 no ranking do site e outrora revista Spin. “Acabou Chorare”, dos Novos Baianos, ficou na 30ª posição, e, mais à frente, na 19ª colocação, “Clube da Esquina”.
